又要開始編高三學測模擬題──單字分級工具

I'm starting to create a mock test for the third-year high school entrance exam

The life of hair loss

Back in my younger days, I used to think that only programmers were the ones losing their hair. But as I've grown older, it's become clear that even teachers can be in the same boat. With just about 100 days left until the big third-year high school entrance exam, students are understandably feeling the heat, and us teachers aren't faring any better!

The brain-twisting process is upon us once again, and it's time to come up with those questions. Oh boy!

One of the challenges of being a teacher, it seems, is crafting those mock exam questions, right?

For these high school entrance exams, vocabulary difficulty typically ranges from levels 3 to 4, with only a handful reaching levels 5 to 6 (but not too many). So, first things first, I need to come up with an article. After that, I'll plug it into a vocabulary grading tool, adjust it to include words of the appropriate difficulty level, come up with questions, and then hash it out with other teachers, incorporating their input. It's a cycle of revising, discussing, revising, discussing, revising, discussing, and, well, you get the idea.

What should be the focus of the articles I'm going to write first?

Perhaps I'll kick things off with one on technology, another on biology, one related to medicine, a slice of history, a touch of literature, and a pinch of politics. Oh, the joys of having absolutely no clue!

I guess my first step is to dive into a variety of books and news articles to gather information. Collecting all that data, well, let's just say it's going to be quite the journey. Sigh!

Then comes the fun part—thinking about different question types. We're talking about reading comprehension questions: those tricky main idea questions, detailed inquiries, synonym challenges, and inference puzzles. Plus, there's the cloze tests, where we dig into grammar, fixed phrases, and transitional words.

I have a feeling I'm about to earn a few more gray hairs on this adventure!

Here's the tool I use to grade vocabulary:

Taiwan Assessment Center's Reading Vocabulary Tool

This nifty website makes the process smooth as silk. You simply toss in the questions you've written, and it color-codes the vocabulary words based on their grading levels.

(The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages,簡稱CEFR)這是歐洲共同語言參考標準

A2 大概對應國中(初級)

B1 大概對應高中(中級)

B2 中高級

C1 高級

C2 精通級 (母語人士級別)
