It’s been a long time since this happened, but I still remember how shocked I was that day.
Characters:
One day, as usual, I went to work, taught my class, and gave the students a test afterward.
“If you score below 80, you’ll need to copy the questions and write out the correct answers,” I announced.
A student raised his hand.
I nodded, letting him speak.
“So this is where you've been waiting for me,” said the 7th-grade boy who hadn't hit the 80 mark.
“Huh?” I was confused.
“What do you mean? Waiting for you?” I asked, trying to figure out what he was getting at.
“So this punishment was waiting for me here,” he said, his face full of reluctance and frustration.
I blinked.
“This has nothing to do with punishment,”
I said calmly, but he didn't look convinced. He was still visibly upset.
I decided to ask him a question.
“What do you think is the point of coming to cram school?” I asked, hoping to steer him toward a more productive thought.
“To get good grades so I can go sell my life at TSMC,” he shot back.
I…
I…I…
I…I…I…
I didn’t even know where to begin. There were so many things wrong with that sentence.
“First of all,” I started, “you’re here to learn, not just to chase grades. And good grades don't mean you have to work at TSMC. Even if you do end up working there someday, the purpose wouldn't be to ‘sell your life,’” I said, trying my best to untangle his warped perception.
“Why would you even think that? Who told you that?” I asked.
“My parents. They said I need to get good grades so I can work at TSMC and sell my life,” he replied, his voice raised.
“That is not the purpose of education,” I said firmly, looking straight into his eyes.
“But then what is the purpose? Isn’t this just punishment? Why are you making me copy everything?” he shot back, clearly upset.
I took a deep breath.
“Having you copy the questions isn't punishment. A test is a way to check whether you've learned the material. If there's something you're still unfamiliar with, that's okay. Copying it out helps you review and understand it better,” I explained.
“This isn't about punishment. I'm asking you to copy it so you'll become more familiar with English. The real goal is for you to learn—not just to copy. Copying is just a tool to help you get there,” I said, a bit exasperated.
“If I can prove that I’ve already learned it, does that mean I don't have to copy it?” he asked, his tone softening a little.
“Yes. If you can show me that you've already understood the material, you don't need to copy it. What matters to me is whether you've learned—not whether you've done the copying,” I said.
Honestly, I was relieved my class was small. If this had been a school class with 20 or 30 students, who would have the time to let each one “prove” they'd learned it? Teachers in those situations barely have time to breathe.
Lesson Learned
This experience taught me something important:
Some students genuinely think corrections are a form of punishment!
Next time, before I assign corrections, I’ll make sure to explain it clearly:
If you don’t want to copy, convince me you’ve already learned it.
