【英文文筆補充錠】外國人說「太陽下沒什麼新鮮事」是想講什麼？
中文很多成語都有歷史的典故，英文也有透過歷史傳承至今的經典名言，「There is nothing new under the sun」就是其中一例，如果把它用在你的英文寫作裡，可以為你的文稿添色不少，讓文筆多一些色彩。這句話是什麼意思，要怎麼用才對呢？
「There is nothing new under the sun」源自聖經
「太陽底下(under the sun)沒有新事(there is nothing new)」這句話最早現在舊約聖經的《傳道書》，所以原本是比較宗教哲學方面的話語。原文是這樣寫的：
What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.
已有的事必再有，做過的事必再做；日光之下並無新事。
在《傳道書》中作者頻繁提起人生的單調無味。雖然我跟聖經不怎麼熟，但這句讀起來第一眼感覺有點厭世(cynical)，感覺好像已看破紅塵，已知道將發生的事都是必然，過去的事只會再度重演，就像人類之於戰爭，歷史只會不斷重演自身。在太陽照射的地球下，一切的過去、當下和未來都了無新意，早就看膩了。
這樣的語感就被沿用到今日的英文，所謂的「太陽下沒什麼新鮮事」，其實就是中文說的「一成不變」、「了無新意」。
看看外國人怎麼使用
最近拜讀英國作者來稿的新作時，愛咬文嚼字的他正好恰當地用了那句話，他寫道：
If our society(社會) lasts(持續下去) for over a 1,000 years like the society of ancient(古代的) Egypt(埃及), maybe(或許) we would demonstrate(體現) the phrase(句子) that “there is nothing new under the sun”.
如果我們的社會就像古埃及社會那樣延續超過一千年，或許我們就會體現「日光之下無新事」這句話 (意思是搞不好我們現在的生活就像古埃及人一樣很一成不變)。
如果你覺得他的用字蠻艱澀不好懂，下面是比較口語好懂的例子：
Whichever(不管哪個) president(總統) is elected(被選上), there is always going to be war(戰爭), physical(實體的) or economical(經濟上的). Well, there is nothing new under the sun.
不論哪個總統選上了，總是會有實體戰爭或經濟戰，世事不過都是如此罷了。
There is nothing new under the sun, but there are lots of old things we don ' t know.
雖說世上沒什麼新鮮事，但還有很多舊事物是我們還不知的。
The actors(演員) and plot(劇情) are so dull(呆板枯燥) and boring(無聊). This movie(電影) proves(證明) that there is nothing new under the sun.
這部電影的演員和劇情很枯燥無趣，真是了無新意(證明了世事無新事)。
你也可以「玩」那句話
有人會把「There is nothing new under the sun」改寫成「There are plenty of(很多) new things under the sun」，意思就變成「世上還有諸多新鮮事」。
There are plenty of new things under the sun, so why be so cynical(厭世的)?
世上還有很多新鮮事啊，所以你幹嘛這麼厭世呢？
還可以這樣玩：
Try to find new things under the sun and you will look at your life in a whole new(全新的) perspective(觀點).
試著去尋找世上的新鮮事，你會用全新的觀點看待自己的人生。
