My job-hunting journey

Hey y'all, I wanna spill the tea on my job-hunting journey.

Several years ago, I decided to ditch selling kicks and dive back into the tutoring game, you know? Started the whole job hunt hustle. After like four freaking months of grinding, I went through interviews with like, what, twenty, thirty companies?

Damn! The outcome? It ain't about my education, major, skills, salary wishes, or benefits.

Even though our country's all chill with same-sex marriage and stuff, claiming to be LGBTQ-friendly and all, turns out being a bit of a tomboy trying to be a teacher might throw some shade.

Society expects

Society expects female teachers to be all gentle, long-haired, makeup-wearing, skirt-rocking, heel-strutting types. Now, I personally think I'm not too shabby, kinda handsome, not "wow" handsome, you know, not like those Instagram influencers. But when I'm out there looking for a job, I get hit with convos like:

"Our company has a uniform policy. Can you handle that?"
"I'm cool with it," I say, keeping it calm.
"But our female teachers wear skirts with the uniform."
"!!!!" Hell no, I can't deal with that. (|||゚д゚)

P.S. Last time, when I watched Director Zhou Meiling's movie, I really resonated with it. It seems that there's a stereotype that flight attendants and female teachers shouldn't wear pants.

Or situations like:

"Our boss likes female employees in high heels. Are you up for it?"
"!!!" Nope. ┐(´д`)┌

Makeup

"Hey, just so you know, our company might need our female teachers to glam up. You cool with that?"
"Sorry, a tomboy doesn't do makeup."

P.S. Saw this thing on YouTube, Yin & Yei said, "Tomboys don't do makeup" (check it out at 2:55). Some tomboys might go for it, but I'm the no-makeup type.

Why can't I land a job

"Ahh, what's up with this society? Do female teachers gotta be all 'gentle, with long hair, wearing makeup, skirts, and heels'?"

Asked my friend, "Dude, why can't I land a job?"
"Ever seen a female teacher who dresses like you?"
"Nah," I said.

"You probably get the vibe of what society wants," my friend grins.
"And where do you usually see girls like you working?"
"Shoe store clerks, hairstylists, breakfast shop attendants, service staff, insurance agents, chefs," I list.
"Do you want your look or the job you want?"
"What! Do I have to choose?" Society's whack, I shake my head.

Gave myself six months

Gave myself six months. If I can't lock down a gig within that, I was thinking of switching to something where I could rock pants.

Thankfully, on month five, I found one. Yeah, the pay sucks, but it's something. Had a year of tutoring experience, but still had to go through the intern grind. First two, three months of that, getting paid like 62 NT dollars an hour (。ŏ_ŏ). So low, considering I used to pull in 300 NT dollars an hour tutoring in college.

Not my first rodeo

Alright, not my first rodeo.

I used to work distributing promotional flyers before, and the pay was only 50 NT dollars per hour, extremely low.

Seems like society ain't vibing with a tomboy look, always bumping into situations that don't follow labor laws, not even hitting minimum wage (。í _ ì。).

But, I really didn't wanna go through the whole job hunt hassle again. A little less on the paycheck is still better than nothing. After the internship, at least the pay was legit.

After entering the workforce

Later on, 'cause my teaching game was more about brains than looks, my salary shot up in the second year, hitting 40K to 50K. Maybe I'm just too damn good. Thank the universe.

Rocking my tomboy vibe, I leveled up my skills. After a year of prep, aced the exams, started teaching public high school freshmen, moved up to sophomores, juniors, and even dabbled in GEPT. Half a year later, started with the elementary level, another half, hit the intermediate. Then, after a year, took on bilingual and international classes.

Life was lit, but studying and prepping got real tiresome. Teaching life was more intense than being a high school senior, always facing new challenges.

One year, outta the blue, my boss drops, "Think you can handle teaching the SAT?" (SAT's kinda like our country's uni entrance exam)
"Never done it, gonna need like six months to prep." I kept it cool.

Tried it, it was tough. I could remember IELTS and TOEFL, but teaching math and science in English? Elementary's cool, but junior high and up... nah, not my gig. Definitely can't swing high school-level English math and science – I'm a humanities student!

Studied for like six months, then told my boss, "Sorry, it's too much, I can't swing it."
