Bluetooth is a technology that lets you connect your phone or computer to other devices. The word "Bluetooth" looks interesting because you can easily tell that it means "blue" and "tooth.” However, the name comes from a real person.
A long time ago, there was a king named Haraldr blátǫnn Gormsson. He was widely known for two things. One was that he joined Denmark and Norway into one country in 958 BC. The other was that he had a tooth which looked dark blue, so people used to call him Bluetooth.
In 1996, three big technology companies—Intel, Ericsson, and Nokia—worked together. They wanted to make a new way for phones and computers to talk to each other without wires. At a meeting, Jim Kardach from Intel had an idea to use Bluetooth.
He said, "King Harald Bluetooth united the north. We want to unite phones and computers just like he did." Later, they thought about changing the name to RadioWire or PAN (Personal Area Network). PAN was more popular then. But when they checked the internet, they saw that many people already knew the name Bluetooth. For that reason, they decided to follow suit.
Another fun fact is about how the Bluetooth logo gets its shape.
It's made from two old Viking letters:
ᚼ (H) and ᛒ (B). These are the first letters of King Harald's name.
