Everyone's Take on Reading Comprehension – A Look Back
I can finally catch my breath.
What a relief!I wanted to share something that happened before the exams.
But first, please watch this animated version of the lesson (Lungteng Edition, Lesson 3).
The Story
This happened a while ago when I was teaching my first-year high school students English Lesson 3.
As you all know, we're now in the era of the 108 Curriculum Guidelines set by the Ministry of Education. The focus is on competency-based learning, meaning students should be able to apply English in real-life situations. So, I incorporated this into my lesson plan.
After watching the animated lesson, I asked my students to summarize the main idea in English.
Once the video ended, I asked,
"Who wants to go first? Raise your hand if you'd like to share the main idea of this lesson."
(以下學生回答有改寫;我把錯誤的用字改掉了,不過意思一致)
One student raised his hand and confidently said,
"I know! The main idea is that life is inherently imperfect, and we should learn to accept our flaws—because striving for perfection will only lead to destruction. See? The scientist in the story wanted perfection, and in the end, his wife died because of it."
"Thanks for sharing. Next," I said.
Then, Student B spoke up:
"The takeaway from this lesson? Don't be stupid. If you're too dumb, you'll die. Look—the female lead literally died from stupidity. She didn't even know what her husband gave her to drink, and she just chugged it down. How can anyone be that clueless?"
I was momentarily speechless. Σ(`L_` )
After a brief pause, I said, "Thanks for sharing. Please be mindful of how you phrase things—let's try to keep our discussions constructive. Next."
Then Student C chimed in:
"The lesson here? Stay away from toxic partners. The moment you see any red flags, divorce them immediately if you want to stay alive."
Me:

Taking a deep breath, I said,
"Thank you all for sharing." At that point, I decided not to call on anyone else.
Their reading comprehension is certainly…
Unique.
Is this what high school students are like these days?
What about you?
Dear readers, after reading this lesson, what do you think its main idea is? Share your thoughts!
Do you agree with these three students, or do you have a different interpretation?
