US government shuts down after Senate fails to pass spending bill
The United States government has partially shut down after last-ditch efforts by lawmakers to pass a spending bill failed.
The federal government ran out of money after a Democratic-backed spending bill that would have extended health care subsidies under the Affordable Care Act and reversed cuts to Medicaid failed, as well as the GOP-backed stopgap funding measure that would have funded the government for seven weeks also failed.
After the failed votes, Republicans and Democrats traded blame for the impasse.
Hakeem Jeffries, the leader of the Democrats in the House of Representatives, accused Republicans of voting to "hurt everyday Americans".
On social media, the White House posted the two words "Democrat Shutdown" above an image of a countdown clock reading zero.
During the shutdown, as many as 4 million federal employees, including some service members, could go without a paycheck.
Hundreds of thousands of federal workers would be furloughed without pay and a wide range of services could be disrupted, from financial oversight to trash pickup at national parks.
Other workers deemed essential would remain on the job, though they also would not get paid. In the past, federal workers have been paid for their time off retroactively.
This is not the first time Washington has faced such a standoff.
We last saw a shutdown in late 2018, which lasted 35 days - the longest in history.
It was brought about by disagreements over funding a wall on the Mexico border. It finally ended in part because air traffic controllers, who had been working for a month without pay, started calling in sick en masse.
Historically, shutdowns have had limited impact on financial markets because investors typically recognise that a shutdown is short-lived.
This time, the dynamics are different as the government is planning to slash jobs vs just putting employees on furlough, and this is set against President Donald Trump's broader economic agenda focused on tariffs, which have already pressured businesses.
