Summary: NeuroImage has long been the leading journal focusing on imaging neuroscience, with both the highest impact factor and the largest number of papers published annually. NeuroImage’s editorial team has tried to convince Elsevier to reduce the publication fee from $3,450, as we believe large profit is unethical and unsustainable. Elsevier is unwilling to reduce the fee; therefore, with great regret, all editors (more than 40 academic editors) of NeuroImage and NeuroImage:Reports have resigned. We are starting a new non-profit Open Access journal, Imaging Neuroscience, intended to replace NeuroImage as our field’s leading journal.
Announcement: It is with regret that we must inform you that effective the 17th of April 2023 the current Editors of Neuroimage will no longer be responsible for handling new submissions to the journal. We are very disappointed with the decision of the NeuroImage Editors to step down from their roles, especially as we have been engaging constructively with them over the last couple of years, since we took the decision to make NeuroImage gold open access. In line with our policy of setting our article publishing charges competitively below the market average relative to quality, the fee that has been set for fully open access NeuroImage is below that of the nearest comparable journal in its field, based on FWCI. We want to reassure all authors that the Editors will continue to work together with the Journal for the foreseeable future to ensure all submissions already in process are handled appropriately to a final decision. In addition, Neuroimage has already implemented measures to ensure the continuation of the high service levels for authors of new submissions. Neuroimage has appointed an interim internal editorial team while we transition to a permanent team that will follow the highly successful hybrid model of in-house/external editors. Elsevier is committed to advancing open access to research, which is an integral part of our commitment to a collaborative, inclusive and transparent world of research. We are one of the fastest-growing open access publishers in the world. Nearly all our 2,800+ journals enable open access publishing, including 700 fully open access journals. In 2022 Elsevier published over 150,000 gold or pay-to-publish OA articles, an increase of more than 26% over 2021. We make openly available information related to our pricing policies on our website, which can be found here. Details about our publishing volumes under pay to read (subscription) and pay to publish (open access) business models for our individual journals is analyzed here, and for the whole of Elsevier is here."
