Nature deficit disorder is a concept proposed by American writer Richard Louv in 2005. It refers to problems caused by people's lack of contact and experience with nature in modern society.
With the advancement of technology and increasing urbanization, modern people spend less and less time outdoors, contacting and exploring the natural environment.
Children and teenagers are particularly susceptible, as they spend most of their time indoors, interacting with electronics and virtual worlds while ignoring the presence of nature.
During this Chinese New Year holiday, my family and I returned to a more rural area in mainland China. That week completely differed from my current lifestyle, and I felt utterly relaxed. In addition to visiting New Year's greetings that week, my nephews and I also participated in many outdoor activities, such as walking, riding bicycles, picking strawberries, barbecuing, stargazing, etc. The environment there is fresh, and the air is clear. When I walk into nature away from electronic products, I feel nature's tranquility and beautiful scenery. Not only do I feel more relaxed, but I also feel less stressed and anxious.🥰
Compare this to Hong Kong, where negative news about emotions and stress appears daily. The busy pace of life makes it difficult for Hong Kong people to get in touch with nature. I hope Hong Kong's education system and quality of life will change very soon so that children, teenagers, and adults can easily connect with nature, bringing everyone a more prosperous life experience.
