Teaching Journey – Episode 2 (Tutoring)
Today, I want to share my first experience designing a custom English composition worksheet for a high school senior.
This happened about six or seven years ago.
Teaching public junior high students was relatively easy. I could finish writing one workbook in about four days, and completing all six volumes of one version took about a month (since I needed to take breaks). After that, I’d go through some practice quizzes and midterm exams from public schools, write up a lesson plan, and be ready to teach. In total, it took about two months of prep time.
High school, on the other hand, required a lot more preparation. It took me two months to write just one workbook, and by the time I finished all six volumes, nearly a year had passed. Reading through just one version of the textbook took about a year, and back then, high schools had three different versions!
At the time, the main high school textbook publishers were Far East, Lungteng, and Sanmin. I started by writing materials for Lungteng, then moved on to Far East, so for the first two years, I didn’t accept any students using the Sanmin version.
These days, Far East isn’t in use anymore. The current popular high school textbooks are from Lungteng, Hanlin, Sanmin A, and Sanmin B. The variety of versions is a real challenge for teachers. We spend so much time writing different workbooks that we end up dreaming about it >口<.
In my first year of tutoring, I only accepted junior high students. By the second year, I had finally finished studying the Lungteng high school version, so I started taking in first-year high school students using that version. As they moved up from first to second and then to third year, I began tutoring third-year students as well.
One day, a student who had been with me since first year came to me in his third year and said his school's composition class was too difficult.
He said, “I’m still just a baby! I don’t understand anything.”
I…
I…I ...
I was speechless = =!
I looked at this “baby,” now a high school senior, and said,“I don’t think there’s an English composition class for ‘babies.’”
I have a friend who’s a designer, and he’s always complaining about difficult clients. Looking at this high school "baby," I thought, “I guess he counts as a client too—after all, he is a customer.”
Luckily, my “client” wasn’t asking for something like "rainbow-colored black."
Since there was no “baby” composition class, he wanted something at a sixth-grade level. He didn’t like writing, so he asked if we could minimize that.
Based on his requests, I spent a few afternoons designing two versions.
Since he didn’t like writing, I included drawing and dialogue activities.
As for simple topics, hmm...
I thought, maybe he could talk about his family or describe a family activity. That seemed simple enough.
My Family
1. Who is in your family?
Draw a picture of all your family members inside the box below. Don’t forget to include pets if you have any!
2. What do they look like?
Draw a line to match the description with the person in your family.
(Write their name next to the correct description)
3. How do they make you feel?
Circle the emoji that shows how each family member makes you feel:
😊😡🥳😢😴
4. A special message!
Write one nice thing you want to say to your family:
_______________________________________________________
A Portrait of My Family Members"
In this essay, you will write two paragraphs to describe your family members. In the first paragraph, focus on the physical appearance and personality traits. Describe what they look like, how they dress, and their general attitude or mood. In the second paragraph, write about how they behave in daily life and how you interact with them. You may include how they support you, what you enjoy doing together, and how your relationship has developed over time.
Drawing (A Fun Family Activity)
Please write three sentences explaining why this activity is special to you.
1. _____________________________________________________________
2. _____________________________________________________________
3. _____________________________________________________________
Describe how you felt while doing this activity with your family.
In this essay, you will write two paragraphs about a special activity you enjoy doing with your family. In the first paragraph, describe the activity itself—what it is, when and where you usually do it, and who participates. In the second paragraph, explain why this activity is meaningful to you and how it strengthens your relationship with your family. Be sure to include your thoughts and feelings to make your writing more personal.
